Bipolar I disorder and Bipolar II disorder are two different types of mental illnesses within the bipolar disorder spectrum, each with its unique set of symptoms and diagnostic criteria.

Bipolar I disorder is characterized by at least one manic episode, which is a period of abnormally elevated or irritable mood, increased energy, and activity, lasting for at least one week. A person with bipolar I disorder may also experience depressive episodes, which are periods of sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest, and other symptoms of depression.

On the other hand, Bipolar II disorder is characterized by recurrent depressive episodes alternating with hypomanic episodes, which are milder than manic episodes but still involve increased energy, activity, and a heightened mood. A person with Bipolar II disorder has never experienced a full manic episode.

Both Bipolar I and Bipolar II disorders are serious mental illnesses that can cause significant distress, impairment, and disruption in a person's life. It is important to seek professional help if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder.
